Records Retention & Disposition

The University of Virginia is a state-supported institution and as such University records are subject to the Virginia Public Records Act (VPRA). One of the keys to complying with the VPRA, and establishing a solid records management program in your office, is knowing how long to keep records and what to do with them once the retention period has expired.

The retention schedules database, with series descriptions written in UVA-specific language, will help you identify the appropriate retention period and official record keeper for your records. Once you've identified your records, you will use the Certificate of Records Destruction (RM3) to request approval to destroy.
